Portishead and North Weston Town Council consider that insufficient weight is given to the need to ensure high speed broadband for homes and places of work in Portishead.

Gladman support the vision for Portishead to become an "increasingly popular location for new business as well as providing opportunities for existing local businesses to expand and grow." However, in order to achieve this the availability of employment land must grow across all B use classes to meet the needs of Portishead and inevitably will require the review of the Portishead settlement boundary.

FOSBR (Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways) strongly supports the reinstatement of passenger services on the railway line from Portishead to Bristol. We are, however, dismayed to read that a rapid transit link is being considered as an alternative. For the reasons we have set out under CS10, we urge that the words 'or rapid transit' are deleted from the second paragraph of VIS 5.

"VIS 5: Portishead Vision - Amendment. By 2026 Portishead will have undertaken an extensive period of consolidation and become an increasingly popular location for new business as well as providing opportunities for existing local businesses to expand and grow. HEALTHCARE SERVICES WILL BE INCREASED TO MEET LOCAL NEEDS. There will be increased opportunities for residents to work locally, instead of commuting to Bristol and its north fringe."

The need to reinstate the rail link between Bristol and Portishead is immediate. This should take priority over junction improvements at M5 J19 as the long term impact will be far greater. The council should also include Pill area and additional train stops to assist inevitable commuting from this growing service village. The development of the Marina area over the last 5-10 years without the provision of quick and economical public transport links to Bristol makes a mockery of the system.

The current commuting patterns for Portishead are of particular concern to the Agency in light of the impacts on Junction 19 of the M5. References to new employment opportunities as well as a sustainable link to Bristol are therefore supported.

Pg 16 VIS 5 (Portishead): The need to reinstate the rail link between Bristol and Portishead is immediate. The development of the Marina area over the last 5-10 years without the provision of quick and economical public transport links to Bristol makes a mockery of the planning system.

This vision looks to retain the distinctive character of Portishead where ever possible and mentioned, in particular, the High Street. It is also important to protect the surroundings of main approach road to Portishead otherwise Portishead is at risk of looking like every other mid-size town in England.
